Overview
St. Mary of the Woods College in Indiana has been educating female students since 1840, and has been offering an online program of study for more than forty years. It is one of Indiana's leaders in providing distance education. The school was founded by and is affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church, and remains a very small campus, with fewer than 2000 students and fewer than 1500 undergraduate students. However, it offers distance education to thousands of students- both men and women. The school offers associate's degrees, bachelor's degrees, post-baccalaureate programs, and several teacher licensure options.
Student Appeal
St. Mary of the Woods College offers students the chance to learn in a very small school environment, where students are able to build personal relationships with each other and with their professors. Learning in an entirely female environment that is focused on Roman Catholic Church philosophies, and some students find that attending a school that is aligned with their own beliefs is their ideal situation. An English degree can be earned entirely online, and can feature any one of these concentrations, as well as one of the many online minor options. The English department will work with students to help them create a schedule that is geared toward their personal interests, but 13 3-credit courses are required of all students: Age of Shakespeare, Creative Writing, Literature and Myth, British Literature, American Literature, American Women Writers, Poetry, Creative Non-Fiction, Women Writers, Fiction, Modern Word Literature, Topics in English, and an English elective course.
