Overview
Initially found by Ira Allen in 1791, the University of Vermont is the fifth college established in New England, following Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth and Brown. The school's initials are actually UVM -- Universitas Viridis Montis -- Latin for University of the Green Mountains. Begun as a private university, UVM now blends the traditions of both a private and public university, combing faculty-student relationships most commonly found in a small liberal arts college with the resources of a major research institution. UVM's academic programs features 54 master's and 24 doctoral programs, and an M.D. program through the College of Medicine. It has also expanded online with instructional quality matching that of on-campus courses.
Student Appeal
Online students attend class when it is convenient for them — perfect for professional and stay-at-home parents. The courses are asynchronous, so students do not have to log onto the course at the same time. Enrollees interact with classmates through discussions and group activities, in classes taught by an experienced faculty.
